What I Discover about “How” to Get Results with Goals & Priorities
September 22, 2008 Home, Personal Development No CommentsThere is a definable difference in goal setting and getting your priorities straight. This is eye opening advice is about achieving the success you deserve.
A goal is a benchmark, the pictured result; a priority is the mindset and the avenue used to reach a goal. They go hand in hand in the success progression.
With the Secret and the Law of Attraction there has been a wide scope of successes with even more failures in fulfilling wants and desires.
There are a lot of myths about the ‘how’ of getting what it is we ‘think’ we want. One myth is thinking that certain goals are selfish, I call it self-care. Because let’s face it – if you don’t about take care of yourself who else will?
Defining Goals
Let’s clarify some differences in what we perceive as a goal.
There are two types of goals, Emotional and Physical.
- The emotional type:
- I want to be rich
- I want a new house
- I want to be healthy
An emotional goal is ‘wishing’ and ‘wanting’. It has no benchmark. Like saying ‘I want to be rich’. So What? Not to disregard the emotion, but it is what it is, until you define it.
A physical goal is a want or desire that has been defined and can be acted upon.
- The physical type:
· I intend to make $5,000 a month.
· I intend to be smoke free.
· I intend to build a retirement fund.
· I intend to be healthy, Etc.
See the difference? Want versus Intent. To validate the meaning, ask and answer some relevant questions. WWHWW. Why? Who? How? What? When? Read the book ‘The Power Of Intention” by Dr. Wayne Dyer.
Here’s a big one; ‘I want to be rich!’ [emotional] Q:
· Why do I want to be rich?
· Who, besides myself, will benefit?
· How would my life be different?
· What tools do I need?
· When will it happen?
The Answers change the focus to the physical part of the goal:
· Why? =security
· Who? =Family
· How? =Avenues
· What? =Amounts
· When? =set dates
The statement ‘I want to be healthy’ [emotional]
As it’s written, is a ‘want’, it has no definition until you ask & answer:
-
- Why do I want to be healthy?
- Who will benefit from it?
- How will I get from here to there
- What does it mean to me?
- When will it happen?
It has no specific aim unless or until you NAME it. The defining moment comes when you can say:
- ‘I intend to be smoke free’,
- ‘I intend to weigh — pounds’, etc.
It’s only when you do the Q&A, then take aim, when you begin to see the difference.
GETTING YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT
Priorities are avenues or road maps. With out them it has the appearance of a three ring circus. What do you need to do First?
What is the most important thing that you want to do? wwhww
1. Make money,[get a job, start a biz]
2. Be healthy
3. Help others/family
Break each goal down in order of priority. Then Start take ‘one defined goal’, break it down, do the Q&A again, prioritize it, what do I need to do? Figure it out. ‘You’ve only just begun’!
What is churning in your stomach that makes you want this or that? What is going on in your life that makes you think you are ready to do what it takes to have what you want?
Another MAJOR myth is thinking you don’t need to write down goals and priorities. **Most likely you’re not serious about succeeding if you are not doing this!
Writing them down makes it more real. Remember, you’ll be working with several lists. Put in on a dream board. Make them the object of your affection. Ask the questions!! Keep a journal.
Esther and Jerry Hicks said it best “My financial Decline Will Not Elevate the Impoverished” Use that same phrase with different words “My lack of health will not benefit myself or anyone”. “MY LACK of any thing will not help anyone.” You cannot contribute what you don’t have.
Setting goals and priorities for yourself is about self responsibility and when you use this simple formula, you’ll change your results & exceed your goals.
NAME IT, CLAIM IT. DO IT!
